This is the first question most couples ask us, and it deserves a clear answer. A beach ceremony in Thailand is not, on its own, a legal marriage. Legal marriage in Thailand happens at a District Office (called an Amphur), with translated documents, embassy paperwork and Thai officials. It is possible, but it is a different day, in a different place, with a different feeling.
What almost every couple actually does

The overwhelming majority of couples who marry on a Phuket beach choose a symbolic ceremony. They either handle the legal paperwork in their home country before they fly (a quick registry office appointment), or after they get back. The beach in Phuket is the wedding they remember. The paperwork is just paperwork.
Every element of the day is real: a professional celebrant, personal vows, rings, a signing table, photography and witnesses. Nothing about it looks or feels rehearsed. Guests can't tell the difference — and honestly, neither will you.
Why we don't push legal registration in Thailand
We could, but it usually makes the trip more stressful than it needs to be. Thai legal marriage requires notarised affidavits from your embassy in Bangkok, certified translations, and a visit to a District Office during working hours. For a couple flying in for a week, that's most of the holiday spent on admin. If your home country recognises overseas registry marriages easily, we can point you in the right direction — but for most couples, a home-country registration plus a Barefoot beach ceremony is the calmer, cheaper, more beautiful path.
What Barefoot handles
The Barefoot ceremony covers everything you actually see on the day: celebrant, beach permit, signing table, flowers, photography, transport and coordination. If you want the full detail, see The Barefoot Ceremony or read how it works step by step.
When you might want more than a symbolic ceremony
If you specifically need a Thai legal marriage — for immigration, residency or another legal reason — that's outside what Barefoot handles. Our sister planners at Unique Phuket Wedding Planners handle full bespoke weddings including legal registration. For everyone else, Barefoot is designed to be simpler.
